GARY C. HEERN for TRUSTEE
As a proud lifelong resident of Makanda Township, I have strong roots in our community that date back generations. My family's dedication to public service is part of what drives me to serve. My paternal grandfather served as Township Clerk for over 40 years, and my maternal grandfather served as Township Supervisor for 8 years. Their examples of commitment and integrity have shaped my values and my passion for serving my neighbors in Makanda Township.
With years of experience as a firefighter, Assistant Fire Chief, and local business owner, I bring a unique and hands-on perspective to the Township Board. I’ve spent over three decades dedicated to the betterment of our community, serving as Township Trustee from 1989 to 2021. During my time in office, I took concrete actions that ensured our Township’s growth and security. Key accomplishments include:
Building Strong Foundations: Played an integral role in the construction of Fire Station 1 and helped oversee the building of Fire Station 2, ensuring critical infrastructure to protect the safety of the Township. Served as the Township Board liaison on the Specification Writing Committee for the new pumper truck that was recently delivered to the Fire Department, ensuring that the vehicle met the Fire Department’s specific needs and standards.
Fiscal Responsibility: Prioritized responsible financial planning by working together to set aside funds year after year, ensuring the Township could make important investments like purchasing a new fire truck without relying on grants or outside funding.
Mentoring Future Leaders: Worked closely with less experienced board members to ensure they understood and upheld state regulations, to foster a strong, knowledgeable governing body. Community Engagement: Dedicated time and energy to listening to the concerns of Township residents and ensuring their voices were heard, always working for the good of the entire community over personal agendas. As one of the few remaining charter members of the Makanda Township Fire Department, and having served as its second Fire Chief, I have seen firsthand the vital role our Fire Department plays in keeping our community safe. My 26 and a half years with the Carbondale Fire Department, retiring as Assistant Fire Chief, further strengthened my commitment to our fire service. Even after my time as an elected official, I continued my Township service by contributing to the Township Building Committee and the Interview Committee for the Firefighter/Clerk position.
Our Fire Department is one of Makanda Township’s greatest assets, and I am committed to ensuring it remains a top priority. As your representative, I will continue to fight for the resources our Fire Department needs to grow, serve, and protect the people of Makanda Township. Together, we will ensure a strong and prosperous future for our community, rooted in responsibility, safety, and a commitment to fiscally conservative values.
